Christmas Bird Count

Birding presents a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, slow down, and to take in what’s around you. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran, just getting started, or are interested in learning more about birding, there are several events coming up within the next month that you will want to attend!

Audubon’s 119th Christmas Bird Count is just around the corner. The Christmas Bird Count is an early-winter bird census and is conducted annually by the National Audubon Society. Starting Friday, December 14 and going through Saturday, January 5, there are a number of meet-ups scheduled throughout Nevada where folks get together to, well, count birds! This is your chance to pair up with an experienced birder to learn more about the hobby, all while contributing to science. How fun is that!?

So, how does it work? First, you will need to find an event near you by clicking on this link. At the event, the count compiler will establish a survey area. Volunteers will then follow specified routes throughout the area, counting every bird they see or hear all day. All birds are counted all day!

Participation is free, so come on out and learn more about Nevada’s birds!
