Take a Hike!

Saturday, November 17th, is National Take a Hike Day. This is a fantastic opportunity to head out into the great outdoors to do some exploring! While you’re out on the trail, keep your eyes peeled for tell-tale signs of our wild neighbors. You never know what you will see or find!

Hiking in the wilderness gives us a chance to play detective. If you find tracks or scat left behind by an animal, try to figure out who they belonged to. Was it a bear, mountain lion, or coyote? Perhaps some sort of reptile? How do you know? That’s all part of the adventure! There are many books and websites dedicated to helping you learn how to identify tracks and scat. In fact, the Nevada Department of Wildlife has a great reference page complete with photos and descriptions. Check it out!

If you aren’t quite sure about a track, take a photo with something in the frame, preferably a ruler, for scale. When you get back home, hop online and see if you can figure it out.

Happy trails!
